What I Check on a Tadalafil Pack Before I Take It

Every time a new box of tadalafil arrives, I spend two minutes with it before a single tablet leaves the blister. It sounds fussy, but generic packs vary a lot in colour, name and layout, and a quick routine stops small mistakes before they happen. Here is the list I run through, in the order I do it.

1. The active ingredient, not the brand name

Generic tadalafil is sold under many names: Tadacip, Ciasel, Tadaboom, Vidalista and others. The name on the front matters far less than the small print underneath it. I look for the word "tadalafil" printed clearly on the carton and on the blister strip. If the active ingredient is not printed plainly, I don't take it and I contact the seller.

2. The strength matches my prescription

The licensed strengths of tadalafil are 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg. The low strengths are for once-daily use, while 10 mg and 20 mg are taken as needed, no more than once in 24 hours. Some packs on the market are 40 mg or 80 mg. Those are above the licensed dose, so they are not something to take unless a prescriber has specifically set that dose. I check the number on the pack against the number on my prescription every single time, because a 20 mg box and a 5 mg box from the same maker can look almost identical.

3. Expiry date and batch number

Both should be printed on the carton and usually on the foil too. I check the expiry date is comfortably in the future and that the batch number is readable. If anything ever goes wrong, the batch number is the first thing a pharmacist will ask for.

4. Blister condition

I run a thumb along the strip and look for torn foil, crushed tablets or pockets that have already been opened. Tablets should be whole and look alike. A different colour from my last order is not automatically a problem, because generic makers use their own coatings, but every tablet within one pack should match.

5. The patient leaflet

I actually read it, at least the parts on interactions and side effects. The big one with tadalafil is nitrates: the two must never be combined, and the same goes for riociguat. I also compare the leaflet with anything new I have been prescribed since my last order, especially blood pressure tablets or alpha-blockers for the prostate, and I ask my pharmacist if I'm unsure.

6. Daily or as-needed instructions

This is the one that catches first-time buyers out. On a daily 5 mg dose, you take a tablet at roughly the same time every day whether or not you plan to have sex. On 10 mg or 20 mg as needed, you take it at least 30 minutes beforehand, and the effect can last up to around 36 hours. Mixing the two patterns, for example taking a daily tablet and then a 20 mg tablet on top, is not how either is meant to be used. I stick to the pattern my doctor set.

7. Storage

I keep the strip in its original box, away from bathroom steam and out of reach of anyone else in the house. Tablets tipped into unlabelled pill boxes lose the strength and expiry details that make this whole checklist possible.

What I look for in the shop itself

When I buy generic tadalafil online, I want a store that asks for a valid prescription, lists the exact strength and maker on every product page, and flags any strength that sits above the licensed dose. If you buy medicine online and a site skips any of those, that is a good reason to look elsewhere. This detailed guide on how to buy tadalafil online brings the brands, licensed strengths and pack sizes together in one place, and the men's health medicines range shows the current packs.

The whole routine takes less time than making a cup of tea, and it means I always know exactly what I am taking.

This is general information, not medical advice. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any medicine.
